1. During the Spring season, why do we need to live in the SOLL area to have my child play here?
Little League's residency requirements state that all players must reside within the Leagues' approved boundaries as stated in their charter. This rule applies to all Little Leagues. View SOLL Zip Codes Here
Little League requires leagues to verify residency by having parents show three (3) different proofs of residence within the league's boundaries. At SOLL, we do this at Tryout check-in time. View details here
2. What happens after I complete my child's registration?
Registration for Spring baseball is generally from October through December. In January, SOLL conducts 4 days of tryouts over two weekends for ages 6-12. Each player will be assigned a specific day & time for their tryout. When you arrive, players of similar ages will be placed into a group and they will take the field. Tryouts include, out fielding, in fielding, batting and base running. In AA-Juniors, players who want to show their pitching technique will be provided time at the end of their group tryout. Beginning the last week of January, teams will be formed (the drafts) and practices will begin in early February. Teams practice twice a week at the beginning of the season.
NOTE: Juniors and Girls Softball divisions have a different tryout schedule and those players will be notified separately.
3. Can I request my child be placed in a specific division?
Every year, we receive numerous questions or requests from parents concerning the placement of their child in a particular division. No decisions can be made about division placement or requests until Sherman Oaks Little League's registration period is completed and we know how many children will be playing at SOLL during the upcoming season. Tryouts are also required in the placement process.
NOTE: ALL DIVISIONS ARE BASED SOLELY UPON A DRAFT. THE NUMBER OF PLAYERS REGISTERED FOR THE LEAGUE -- BY AGE GROUP -- AND THE NUMBER OF TEAMS IN EACH DIVISION WILL DETERMINE HOW MANY PLAYERS MAY BE DRAFTED INTO A PARTICULAR DIVISION.
- NO CHILD IS GUARANTEED TO BE DRAFTED INTO A PARTICULAR DIVISION.
4. My child is league age 6 this year and played Tee Ball at SOLL. I'd like him/her to have the opportunity to play in the Farm division. How should I register them?
Little League rules allows league age 6 year old children who played one spring season of Tee Ball at SOLL to tryout for the Farm division. Available space in Farm is a determining factor on how many league age 6 year olds may be added to the Farm division. You must first register your child in the Tee Ball division and make a note in the registration that your child will tryout for Farm. IF drafted to a Farm team, your registration fee will be adjusted to the Farm-Majors rate..
5. What is the difference between a Team Manager and a Coach?
At SOLL, a Team Manager is the Head Coach. He/She is responsible for the entire team i.e., planning and conducting practices and game lineups/strategies. Team Managers are responsible for knowing the Little League rules as well as SOLL Local Rules. They must ensure all players are treated fairly, provide the opportunity for the kids to learn and play different positions and promote good sportsmanship.
The Assistant Coaches help the manager and team at practices and games. When the Team Manager is absent, the Asst. Coach may assume the manager's role for a practice or game.
6. What is the role of a Team Parent?
The Team Parent is an integral part of the team as they assist the manager by organizing and distributing information to the parents. They ensure volunteers are assigned for Snack Bar shifts, help with fundraising and any communications to the team.
7. Why does SOLL have fundraising events?
Our registration fees do not cover all expenses needed to operate our League, so in addition to registration, there is additional fundraising at SOLL. This includes Team Sponsors (2 required for each team), Hit-a-Thon, Dodger Night and Field signs for businesses. We ask for your participation to help keep SOLL the best place for your children to play baseball.
8. Why do we need to help in the Snack Bar?
Our Snack Bar is wonderful gathering place for players and families before, during and after games. It is also our largest fundraiser. The Snack Bar is run by volunteers and is always open on game days. While we have experienced Snack Bar managers, we need team volunteers to help staff the Snack Bar.
Each team, on a rotating basis provides 2 parent volunteers to work in the Snack Bar during their child's game. The shifts are generally just 2 two hours and your time not only ensures the Snack Bar will remain open but allows you to meet other families in your league. Team Parents will have the Snack Bar schedules for your team.
9. Why do I have to fill out a volunteer form?
SOLL is required to have all board members, managers, coaches, and other volunteers or hired workers who provide regular service to the league or/and who have repetitive access to or contact with players or teams annually fill out the Little League Volunteer Application and provide a government-issued photo ID. Additionally, the league is required to conduct a background check on each of these individuals. SOLL is required to sign an agreement on the charter application that it will comply with Regulations I(b) and I(c) 8 & 9. Click here to get a volunteer form
